Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek is a 22-day trekking experience that takes you through some of the most remote and sacred Himalayan landscapes in Nepal. This trek combines cultural exploration alongside adventurous trekking in the hidden Tsum Valley, encountering some remote Tibetan Buddhist communities, and then circling the imposing Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) with the iconic Larke La Pass (5,106m)

Interesting Fact

The Tsum Valley (Tsombo meaning “vivid valley” in Tibetan) became fully open to foreign trekkers in 2008 and is one of Nepal’s most isolated regions, with traditional Bon and Buddhist customs, festivals, and a unique family system

Mu Gompa at 3,700 m is thought of as the spiritual heart of Tsum (nearby Milarepa’s Cave is notable as the meditation cave of the Himalayan saint Milarepa)

The Manaslu Circuit was closed until 1991 and still has a regulated trekking area as a restricted area that allows trekkers to enjoy peace and spectacular natural beauty with significantly fewer trekkers than the Everest or Annapurna regions

Mount Manaslu means “Mountain of the Spirit” in Sanskrit (manasa is soul/spirit) and carries religious significance to locals and pilgrims

The trek traverses six ecological zones, from subtropical foothills to arctic high passes, and offers abundant biodiversity. While hiking in the Manaslu Conservation Area (1,663 km²), you may encounter rare animals, including snow leopards, red pandas, and Himalayan tahr, over 110 species of birds, and more.

The biggest village on the trek is Samagaon (3,530 m), which is an excellent acclimatization base before onward trekking to Pungyen Gompa (at ~4,400 m) and the Birendra Tal, a freshwater lake in the alpine environment, at the end of a valley close to the Manaslu Glacier. Third Rock Adventures

Samdo (3,875 m) is the last village on the trek before you walk to Larke La (the full elevation is based on the successful trek), and is also an option for a side-trip ridge hike to the Tibet border viewpoint (approx. 5,000 m)

This area is a feast for the eyes, but especially peaceful for those who crave solitude and love nature. It retains a sense of wild, untouched nature, and indeed, this is a lovely trek even at peak times; you will experience the area’s serene trails with minimal noise or litter. Many hikers will attest to meeting very few fellow trekkers along their hikes in the area
